Unlike other essential oil based products, Citriodiol® has passed the most rigorous safety and efficacy tests.  While often characterised as cosmetics or personal care products, insect repellents generally require much more stringent testing and regulatory approval including human health and environmental risk assessments by relevant authorities.  In some jurisdictions (such as the European Union), insect repellent are actually classed as biocides and are evaluated alongside other insecticides under the Biocidal Products Regulation (BPR).

In the United States, Citriodiol® is also known as Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus, or OLE. It was first registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in 2002. Citriodiol® has been reviewed and exceeded the highest standards, obtaining registration and end-use product approval from regulating agencies around the world, including:
